Halloween Is Upon Us

Well the boys are in full Halloween mode.  They both love using their imaginations and creative spirit to come up with awesome costumes.  Gee I wonder who they got that from? 😆

Jordan sent me a pic of an outfit he made, including the mask. Not based on anything just right out of his head.  So impressive.

Instead of his standard Batman, Sam dressed up as Negan from The Walking Dead.  I had an old faux leather jacket that I tailored to fit him and also assisted with turning his beard gray.  He went to a Halloween event and said lots of people asked to take their picture with him.

Sam's friend Isaac stopped by to pick him up and I ended up fixing a portion of his makeup. Both looked great.

Uneventful Week

Been dinking around with crafts and old movies this week.

Updated a beach wreath by adding some shells along with buoys made out of wine corks. Damn it was hard to thread the twine into the corks!  Made holes with a screwdriver then a nail then wrangled awhile to get the rope through it.

Ran across some metal tiles that had been painted white.  Repainted them teal then aged them with wax antique paint along with gold. Much better.

Dug out a large piece of driftwood that needed some help.  Glued blue beads, netting, glass balls, and a message in a bottle.  Set it on my dining room table and it looks very artsy.

During my crafting I've been watching Hitchcock along with a few other oldies.  Spellbound, The Paradise Case, Madame X, The Shop Around the Corner.

Now here it is Friday.  Only plans for the weekend is to attend another Norwex party. After that one I hope to be done for the year with these parties!!

A Little Bit of This and That

Definitely hair is getting longer.  Do you know how hard it is to take a picture of your hair in the back?  Guess I should have used the mirror instead of wrenching my arm behind my head.

Steve arrived yesterday delivering to me my share of the huckleberries along with two pumpkins, including a warted one.  Too cool.

Today he cleaned ducks he had shot Sunday.  Quite the task and thankfully he didn't need my help!!

Stopped by friend Susan's house today to deliver her Norwex items.  We went to sit on the back deck and what was waiting for us? A dead mouse!  Apparently this is a regular routine via the cat.  Still gave me the creeps!

Tonight I made chicken thighs using a recipe from Pinterest.  It is called Holy Yum chicken and it turned out pretty darn good.  Sam joined us for dinner and the decision was unanimous that it was tasty. Here's the recipe:

Holy Yum Chicken
Prep Time
5 mins
Cook Time
40 mins
Total Time
45 mins

If you like mustard, then this Holy Yum Chicken is for you!
Servings: 2 -4
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 - 2 pounds boneless skinless, chicken thighs (most of the fat cut and discarded)
  • 1/2 cup Dijon mustard (must be Dijon mustard, no substitutes)
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup (again, no substitutes. No fake Aunt Jemima stuff)
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar, seasoned or unseasoned
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp fresh rosemary for garnish
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 8x8" oven-proof pan with 2 layers of tin foil.
  2. In small bowl, whisk together Dijon mustard, maple syrup, rice wine vinegar, salt and pepper.
  3. Place the chicken thighs in the foil layered pan then pour the mixture on top of it. Turn the chicken around in the sauce to make sure it gets all coated.
  4. Bake, uncovered, for 40 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven and let chicken sit for 5 minutes then transfer to a plate. Do NOT discard the liquid.
  6. Immediately after plating chicken, whisk in the 1 tbsp. of cornstarch into the liquid in the pan. You'll create a nice, thick sauce to drizzle over your chicken. You need to do cornstarch mixing immediately because the liquid needs to be hot in order for it to thicken properly. If it's still not thickening after 1 tbsp., you can add a little more.
  7. Sprinkle rosemary on top before serving.
  8. Serve with rice or potatoes or vegetables.

Hair and Hyper Hound

The hair continues to grow!!

I've been using some grow long shampoo and conditioner along with stay in spray conditioner for my thick, coarse hair. Appears to be working well as I'm now able to prepare a bun on the top of my head!  Ponytail on top, folded over, then secured with the last loop.  Hasn't been this long in years!  While it's a nice solution to get my hair out of my way, it won't be an out in public kind of do.

Stubbs was in a frisky mood tonight. Took me about 10 tries to get this shot!

An Evening with Sherlock

Back in the day in my late teens and early twenties, I would party at times until the wee hours.  Arriving home and too keyed up to hit the hay, I would grab a glass of milk (or even make milque toast) and surf the TV.  Now, not much would be on the tube at that hour so it was slim pickens.  You either watched Benny Hill, Monty Python, or a movie.  Perhaps the networks waited until late night to show BBC offerings.

In my case, more often than not I stumbled across a Sherlock Holmes movie.  No, not Robert Downey Jr.  These were black and white classics from the 30's and 40's starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

Happened to run across a three movie set of these classics today so had to snatch them up.  Tonight I'm reliving my post-drunken, late night viewing by watching old Basil perform his finest while trading Gin & Tonics for coffee.  Bonus will be no hangover!

Love on this Saturday

Besides being a miserable rainy day, today was also about love.

This morning (after sleeping in until almost 10am!) I watched You've Got Mail. Just love that movie and when Meg and Tom meet up at the end, it's always a sob fest for me!

Then, one of my Facebook friends posted the following love story and it is just so sweet!  It almost gave me another tearfest!

"Just wanted to let all of my Facebook friends know that for the first time in 15 years, I have a partner in my life again. For those of you who do not know my story, I will give a brief recount. All most 30 years ago, I met a handsome young man in Mazatlán, Mexico, while there on vacation. We met in a bar; he did not speak English and I did not speak Spanish. The language barrier didn't stop us from getting to know each other. We traded addresses when we left Mazatlan and agreed to write each other. We did. We were both in college at the time - he began to learn English and took classes in Spanish.

For probably 5 years we met every summer and fell in love with each other. I was crazy in love with this handsome Mexican man, as my friends who knew then could attest to. Unfortunately, due to language barriers, the distance between us, and a series of unfortunate circumstances, we lost contact with each other. I never forgot him and always wondered where he was, what his life was like now, and if he was happy.

With the advent of My Space and then Facebook, I began to look for him. He had a common name, but I looked and looked. I knew the search for him would be like searching for a needle in a haystack and that it was unlikely that I would ever find him. Over the years I kept looking for him, hoping that somehow, someway, I would come across his FB page, if he even had one.

Fast forward to Sunday morning, October 26th, 2014. I had just picked up my phone when it buzzed in my hand with a Facebook Friend Request. To my complete amazement- it was him!!!! At first I thought someone was playing a weird joke on me. But, as I looked at his page, I knew it was him. The beautiful smile, green eyes, and warm brown hair, were the same. I accepted the Friend Request and hastily replied with a text asking if this was the same man I had met in Mexico, so many years before. He laughed and replied it was. We exchanged phone numbers and reconnected. Fast forward again to this week, he is here in Washington with me. He was looking for me for years - I was looking for him for years. I still love him and he still loves me."

Isn't that the sweetest story?  Made me reflect on my own relationship. Almost three years since we met and have been through the ups and downs, heartache and loss, breakups and makeups but in the end we are grateful to be two weirdos who make each other happy.  ❤

And Another Task Done

Ok I didn't clean out the whole garage but I did make a dent in it big enough to fit my car. Finally able to try out my fixed garage door and parked the rig inside. Will be so much nicer than battling the cold and rain.

Put on my long work gloves to add some protection against any potential mice that may be laying in wait for me.  Happy to report there were no sightings!  🐀🐁  Feeling so brave after tackling that potential anxiety-inducing fear!!  I am Wonder Woman!!

Monsoon and Mame

Whipped together the easiest craft ever this week.  Had saved a large pickle jar a couple of months ago as it seemed to be a waste to toss it out.  Ended up painting the lid black then attached a knob to the top.  Filled it up with dog treats and there you go!

Spent the last few days watching the first season of This is Us.  Radio hosts to whom I listen have gone on and on about it so decided to see if it was worth the hoopla.  And you know what? It was!  Great series and super acting.

Ran over to Worksource today and applied for a couple of jobs.  Shall see if they pan out or if the search will continue.

Dark, rainy and depressing outside!  I'm such a summer person so when the fall arrives it's a drag.  Plus October is halfway over!  Christmas will be here soon.

Watching Auntie Mame to pick up my spirits.  Mame and her best friend Vera remind me of a couple other best friends!! 😆

Hit or Big Miss!

Lots of times my crafts work and sometimes they just don't!

I've had a piece of Y-shaped driftwood that I knew would be perfect for some project.  After browsing Pinterest, I decided it would become a mermaid tail.

I painted. I glued. I draped. After looking at the wood closely, it resembled more of a dolphin shape. So I added an eye.  Oh Lord this project was a Pinterest fail!  It's now been relegated to the back porch in the corner where I don't have to look at it and it doesn't have to be inflicted on others!

Fond Memories ❤

One of my childhood classmates posted this kindergarten picture of us on Facebook today.  Aren't we cute? Plus we had the best teacher ever!!

Mermaids and Hitchcock This Friday Night

Found a very promising job prospect today so scurried down to the employment office to apply.  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

This afternoon I began working on a mermaid.  I had one of those wooden art models and figured it would make a good base for a mermaid.

Had a Goodwill dress in the closet that was never going to be worn so removed some fabric and beading from it.  Sewed a mermaid tail then began attaching all sorts of shells and trinkets to the art form.

The mermaid tail wasn't looking very much like a fishtail.  It actually looked akin to '70's disco pants!  Glued the tail together then created a new tail using the glue gun.  Painted it, attached it, and much better!!

All done for the night - will assess it tomorrow to see if it needs any tweaking.  Finishing Hitchcock's "Rope" then off to bed. Hope you all have a fabulous night!!

Alas Tis the Rain

Oh it was a rainy day today!  Sure missing my summer sunshine!

Tackled a few odds and ends today. Remade a wreath in my family room to give it more of a mermaid bend. My stash of crafting odds and ends is boundless with materials, which I put to good use.

Browsed Goodwill this afternoon.  There was a ceramic candle cover that had grabbed my attention but was too overpriced. Today it was on sale for 99 cents so it came home with me.  I pulled out a battery operated candle (with working batteries!) and placed it into the figure.  Looks so cute in the kitchen.

Picked up the other day a green vintage looking handle I thought may work for the sliding glass door.  Yes, been a long time since the handle for the door has consisted of two holes.  Unfortunately, the handle was a wee bit short so had to attach it with wire.  Maybe not the most professional of jobs but at least the handles beat the holes.

Topping today off by sipping a red beer.  It may no longer be summer but I can still pretend it is with my choice of cocktail!

Pretty Pail Per Pinterest

Bonded in a big way with the glue gun tonight.

Saw a project on Pinterest (where else huh) that showed a cup spilling out flowers onto a saucer.  The cup was at a height which was achieved by bending a fork and gluing the hell out of it to the cup and saucer.

Ran with the idea to fit my beach theme.  Found a little pail and painted it teal. Then dug out an old fork, bent it, then used a generous supply of hot glue to adhere it to a large shell and the pail.  Then glued an assortment of shells and a few beads all over, slapped on a felt coffee sleeve, and finished it off with some blue netting. Other than the pail and coffee sleeve, the rest of the materials were already in my craft supplies.

Pretty happy with the way it turned out!

It's Time to Speak Up

Tonight I watched The Accused. Such an excellent yet disturbing picture.  So hard to watch the rape scene. All these men standing around with a mob mentality bellowing out encouragement for the rapists.  Rape isn't sexual - it's an act of power, control, and violence.  It got me to thinking about the recent Harvey Weinstein revelations.

A man with enormous Hollywood power who, on the surface, supported women's roles and their achievements.  However, behind the scenes for decades (yes, decades) he sexually harassed, flashed, and groped a multitude of women, including actresses, reporters, and staff.  If anyone raised a complaint, he paid them off with a confidential settlement.  As the saying goes, he with the gold makes the rules and apparently this was the case with old Harvey.

Is there an innate makeup of the male ego where power and money equals the belief that personal boundaries don't apply? That offensive, violent, and sexually driven behavior can be accepted with just the wave of some cash?  The majority of women, myself included, have had to put up with blatant as well as subtle offensives made by men in power.  When every conversation with the boss always includes a reference to your physicality, i.e., purple looks great on you, did you cut your hair, is that a new dress, etc. Bet these same comments wouldn't be made if I were a man.

I understand a woman's point of view where you simply want it to stop and close the book on the situation instead of broadcasting the sordid details.  But what about the men?  Surely close friends, associates, spouses, lovers, producers, directors and agents, among many others, were aware of Weinstein's behavior.  So why stay silent for so many years?  It's like that same mob mentality.  So what if a female is being screwed right in front of them?  Just ignore it and let it go on? Or speak up?

Harvey Weinstein. Bill O'Reilly.  Bill Cosby. And of course, Donald Trump.  Enough already. Women, let's break out our own ego's and quit putting up with this behavior.  Men, grow a pair and start speaking up to put a stop to these offensives rather than silently standing by, which implies approval.

After watching The Accused, I Googled the cast and ran across an interesting interview with all of them.  Kelly McGillis, who had been raped herself, stated the following:

MCGILLIS After the movie came out, a lot of women came up to me and said: "I'm so glad you did this movie. That happened to me, and I never told anybody." I think it's really surprising how many secrets women carry, really heavy secrets that may not be as extreme as rape but can be as simple as being in an awful situation and selling your soul to get out of it. Those are all ways that we betray ourselves, and that's a heavy burden to bear.

Let's not sell our souls - let's speak up.

Good Tips!

Enough for One Night!

And the crafts keep coming!

Wrapped up an old mirror with marine rope I picked up over the summer for $2. Turned out pretty slick.

Painted a floral tray that was hanging out in my back room.  It looked similiar to the one pictured. Painted it chalk brown, stenciled a crab, added sparkles along with twine covered handles and ta da!  Once sealed, will fit in the living room nicely on top of the ottoman.

Before

After

That's enough for tonight as this diva is ready for some sleep!!

Coffee and Bread This Morning

Oh been a busy bee this morning!

Have had a vintage window frame sitting outside for the longest time. Received it from sis Julie years ago. In its previous life, it had glass in it and I had fake stained glass on it with paint.  Made its way outside where it eventually cracked and the glass fell apart.

Been big into burlap bags so grabbed one that had been purchased from Bob's sporting goods for $2.  Dug out my stapler and discovered I owned not just a heavy duty manual one but an electric one as well.  Used the electric one (which really packs a punch akin to an automatic weapon!) then, when it ran out of staples, grabbed the manual one to finish the job.  Turned out great!  Fincas Mierisch is actually a Nicaraguan coffee company, which I should have checked before stapling to ensure it wasn't something offensive.

Once burlap project was done, I tested out a recipe for keto bread, which uses almond flour and egg whites.  Looks splendid although found out it must be cooled before removing it from the pan. Began easing it out and a chunk tumbled from the pan - oops!  Replaced the wayward bread and am now waiting for it to cool to try!

Late Night Crafting

And another craft project appeared last night!

A weathered board from Willow Grove had been lingering in the trunk of the car for too long.  Snagged it then painted it, attaching a piece of rope also found at the river.  Now where to hang it???

Welcome My Pretties!

Put my noggin to use and found a solution for the single witch's foot!

Steve's aunt Ann gave me a glitter pumpkin a couple years ago. I dug it out along with some fall flowers, grabbed my glue gun and went to work.  Voila!!  Placed this on my front porch and it's cute as a pumpkin!

Pure Imagination Comes in Handy

Picked up a burlap canvas at Goodwill this week. Pondered what to do with it. Tried to stencil it but the paint wasn't going on well so dug out a Washington map. Made my own Mod Podge and adhered the map of my area to the canvas.  Found my neighborhood and stenciled it then added "home."  Turned out pretty cute!  I just love being creative!

Digging through my craft crap ran across a single witche's foot. Hmmm, now what the heck am I going to do with it? And why would I buy just one leg instead of two?  Gotta put my thinking hat on to come up with an appropriate Halloween craft using a lone witchy leg!!

My Sanctuary is Now Clean!

It was a long time coming but it finally hit - my motivation to clean my room!

Up this morning, got my coffee, then began attacking the piles of clothing that needed to be handled. Sorted out clothes to be tossed, including ceremoniously tossing into a large black bag the garbage that was formerly known as my logo work wear. Damn that felt good.

Once clothes were put away, I changed the bedding, organized, and dusted. Lit a candle and called it done!  One more item off my to do list.

Hello Fall

Got my hair colored this morning. Since it's fall, I had Abbie add in some more brown lowlights to break up the blond.  She does such a great job!  Always fun catching up with her as well.

The Mask

Felt my skin needed a pick me up so got a collagen face mask from Walmart.  Had it about three weeks and finally decided to try it out.

Opened the package and unfolded the two part mask - one for the upper part and one for the lower.  Carefully placed it on my face - pretty wet with product. Laid back and waited 20 minutes for the miracle to occur.  Pretty picture huh?  Tomorrow morning I go in to have my hair colored.  Damn, maintaining a youthful appearance is hard work!!

Opportunity in Unexpected Places

Yesterday ran some errands, including stopping at the copy place to get a few copies made.  Per my usual practice, I asked if there were any job openings, mainly so this info could be included on my unemployment claim. The nice front desk gal said yes, there actually was a potential opening and I should return after 2pm to speak to the owner.  Uh oh. Didn't expect that!

Finished my tasks around town then hit the employment office to update and print my resume.  So handy they have computers available to type documents, browse job openings, and print items. It's normally library quiet in there but yesterday a mom and her daughter loudly sat across from me, supposedly working on a resume but mainly focused on gossiping with each other.  Thankfully I was almost done. Grabbed my resumes and hit the door.

Arrived back at the copy place and met with the owner.  He read my resume and obviously my skills were far beyond what they needed.  However, we had a good conversation and he said he is going to hang on to my resume just in case he hears of any HR jobs. The front office gal said I seemed to have high integrity and would fit in with their team. Nice comments from a lady I had just met.

So, an interesting experience and you never know what door may have opened from it.

Blinds and Beavers

Here's a taste of the hunting life.

Steve sent me a pic of one of his duck blinds that is ready to go. At some point this year I'll be experiencing the blinds up close and personal. Only been duck hunting once on Puget Island back in my 20's.  Up early, sat in a slough side blind, and froze off my ass and feet. Thankfully Steve's blinds are all set with chairs and heat.

Steve also traps for a variety of animals that cause damage - beavers, moles, etc.  He was telling me about a recent beaver kill so I had him send me a picture.  I expected blood and gore but it actually isn't too bad. And no, while sitting in a duck blind is acceptable, there won't be any trapping in my future!
