All I Need is Stubbs

Isnt' he cute?  He's snuggled in one of my pillows watching me as I get ready for work.

When Head and Body Conflict

My guy moved to Florida last weekend.  We had an awesome time together and will remain in touch; however, a long-distance relationship isn't what either of us wants.  I shed a few tears on Sunday when he left but am accepting of his move and looking forward to my future.  So why am I falling apart?

It started last Saturday when my tummy was upset; my feelings of nausea lasted until Thursday.  I also began smelling really strong odors; normally I have "allergy nose" so my smeller is dulled.  However, it seemed I could smell the perfume the lady in the last house on the block had worn that morning.  Then my asthma kicked in; I was sucking on that inhaler so hard I thought my eyes would pop out!  I woke up in the middle of the night or woke up very early (4am) and stayed awake.  I left work early on Monday, stayed home on Tuesday, and returned to work on Wednesday.  Unfortunately, a raggedy cough kicked in along with a fever so I hauled my butt in to the doctor Friday morning for a diagnosis and drugs.  I just couldn't handle the wheezing then coughing which seemed to trigger an automatic urinary response from my nether region.  I wasn't sounding or smelling very pleasant!!

Dr. Wang, whom I had never met before but was on the available physician list, was awesome.  We discussed what was going on in my life along with my medical history.  He proclaimed that, although my head was on board with my guy leaving, my body wasn't dealing with it very well.  He diagnosed me with anxiety and anxiety-induced asthma; my emotions and stress were causing the stomach upset, the insomnia, the asthma, the coughing, and even the over-stimulated odor detection!

Dr. Wang used a lot of metaphors and storytelling as he described what was going on in my body.  It was the first time a doctor had truly described in depth how a body behaves due to stress or anxiety and what the drugs he would be prescribing would do to help me battle my health condition.  I'm looking forward to my health catching up with my head so we are all in sync!  I'm also looking forward to not having to become a regular purchaser of Depends due to my cough - I'm too young to be referred to as the Urine Diva!!

Hansel and Gretal Are Dancing a Jig!

Here's the kind of magic that happens during the holiday season where I work.  Cool huh?  Kudos to our very tired pastry baker, who made all of the gingerbread and frosting from scratch!!

7 Life Lessons from Star Trek

Back in the day, I remember watching Star Trek reruns with my mom.  Tribbles and Tranya and I-am-for-you-Captain-Kirk and all that jazz.  For this reason the following post spoke to me; if you were ever a Trekkie, you will appreciate.  Live long and prosper!!
7 Life Lessons You Can Learn from Star Trek
by David Borgenicht

I would say there are seven life lessons I learned from "Star Trek" that I take with me to this day. These are lessons I hope to pass along to my own children someday--but for now, I will share them with the interweb.

1.  The best way to travel is to boldly go where no one has gone before. This is true for vacations, for self-exploration, for life itself. If you want your days filled with adventure, laughter, love, learning and the occasional mind-meld, follow this route.

2.  The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few--or the one. Sometimes you must make great sacrifices for the greater good. And, like the Genesis device, it will all come back around.

3.  Expressing your emotions is a healthy thing. Sure, McCoy seemed angry all the time when exclaiming, "Dammit, Jim! I'm a doctor not a mechanic/bricklayer/soothsayer," but he knew that by expressing his anger and frustration it wouldn't get the best of him and he could then perform at his peak capacity.

4.  When estimating how long a job will take, overestimate--and when you do better your captain will always be impressed. Replace the word "captain" with "teacher" or "mom/dad" and you'll see what I mean. Sure, Mr. Scott might have been telling the truth--maybe it would take six hours to get the warp engines back online in the heat of the battle. Or maybe he was padding things so he looked good. Either way, when the engines did come back on line, everyone was happy.

5.  Wearing red makes you a target. This is true of cars, dresses and, most especially, shirts. Red gets you noticed--which is good if you want to be noticed, bad if you don't want to end up vaporized.

6.  When you don't know what to say, pause. It will give you the time to figure it out. Or at the very least, you'll sound like you're being thoughtful. "But....Spock.....why?"

7.  The most powerful force in the universe is friendship. It's more powerful than phasers, photon torpedos, even more powerful than the force itself. With friends, you can accomplish any task, escape any perilous situation, defeat any enemy--and you get to laugh together when it's all over.

Color Me Shocked and Slap Me Silly!

The Hollywood Legends
I just learned about this story and was shocked, not only because of what happened but also because I, the queen of movie trivia, didn't know about it!!!

While filming 'The Call of the Wild' in 1935, screen legend Clark Gable and then-rising star Loretta Young engaged in an off-screen extra-marital affair that resulted in a secret pregnancy, even more secret birth, and fake adoption.  Gable, then 34, and Young, then 22, fell into an affair while filming 'Call of the Wild' in Washington state during the winter of 1935. When a pregnancy followed, Young had no choice but to go into hiding -- being a staunch Catholic, an abortion wasn't an option. "Wouldn't you [be unhappy] if you were a movie star and the father of your child was a movie star and you couldn't have an abortion because it was a mortal sin?" the actress was quoted as saying in her 1994 memoir 'Uncommon Knowledge.'

Loretta and Judy
Young fled to Europe to hide the pregnancy, and returned to California to have the baby in secret in November of 1935.  Her daughter was handed over to a "series of caregivers," so that Young could return to stardom. It wasn't until 19 months later that Young announced she had "adopted" a daughter, the 19-month-old Judy.  It wasn't until 31 years later that Judy Lewis (formerly Young) realized just how much she was deceived by Young, her birth mother posing as her adoptive mother. The secret love child of two Hollywood legends died this week at the age of 76 from complications due to lymphoma.

Wow!  Quite the story, especially back in the thirties!
