TGIF......and No Work Today!!!

Friday is finally here and I have the day off from work!!  Yee haw!!!  I've taken the day off as the boys are traveling by train (catching it in Portland) to see their father for all of spring break, which means I'll have the house to myself!!!  Love my kids but it's a nice break in routine to have peace, quiet, and cleanliness in the house.  In addition, M will be over to help get the house back in order - it's awesome to have a handyman available to fix those items that have been broken for too long.

Enjoy your weekend Divas!!!

As Seen on TV

Back in January, during a weak moment, I ordered Instant Cover, which promised to be the miracle treatment for under eye circles, which I have had my entire life.  I was anxious to receive this salve to sooth my aging woes; unfortunately, it took three months to receive my package in the mail!  Of course my payment was made immediately; I ended up calling - twice - to check up on shipment of this product.  It finally arrived yesterday in the mail.

Well, it's not really the miracle I was expecting, although it's not a bad cover up product.  It appears to be similar to Kevyn Aucoin 's Sensual Skin concealer - very thick so one only needs to use a smidgen to cover a large space.  It comes with three shades of product - light, medium and dark - along with under eye serum and a spot concealer.

I'm giving this Instant Cover a test drive this week to see how it works.  Hopefully, it will be worth the three month wait!!

Full Life Equals Stack of Mags

Here's what a busy life looks like - ten magazines that haven't yet been opened!  I have subscriptions to Vogue, Allure, Glamour, Food Network, and Style but haven't had the time to relax and read my new issues.  The good news is that my life has been so full of activities that the growing stack of mags has not dampened my enthusiasm.  The bad news is my fashion and beauty mags provide me with a healthy dose of creative spirit for my blog so this may have suffered recently.  Last night I finally ripped the plastic off the Adele issue of Vogue and dug in; I'm making it a goal to read at least three past issues per week so I can get caught on the latest news.

On a side note, yesterday I was able to finish watching the new Mad Men episode that occurred on Sunday.   My only problem - no Betty in this season's premiere.  WTF??  I hope this will be remedied on the next episode!

Weekend of Surf and Sunshine

This weekend was so jam packed I had to take a couple days off from the blog to recover!  Friday found me at the grocery store after work; arriving home there were no boys in site so I had to unload and put away the groceries on my own.  Yuck!  After grocery duty, I cleaned my bathroom, shower, did two loads of laundry, then collapsed into bed after chatting with the boys when they arrived home.

Saturday arrived and with it blue sky and sunshine!  There's nothing better than sunshine to make a day perfect!  M arrived in the morning to check out the lawnmower, which he pronounced in working order.  I set the boys on mowing the front and back yard then M and I cruised over to the car dealership to get an oil change for my whip.  Ended up making an appointment for later in the day so I spent part of the morning giving M a tour of where I went to school and the sights of the local area.  Target was next then we hit Taco Bell to take home.  Lawns were mowed but gas can was empty; we grabbed that then returned to the dealership for the oil change.  While waiting, we cruised around the car lot, fending off salesmen who were eager to take our cash.

Car done, we made our way back home where M then proceeded to add a new handle to the sliding glass door, install a new door knob to my bedroom door, then clean the grill while the boys and I continued the overhaul of the yard and garage.  M grilled ribs and hot dogs while I heated beans and sweated over opening the lid off potato salad.  It was an awesome dinner; grilling was a great way to welcome in spring.

Sunday Jordan, M and I (Sam declined) made our way to the local restaurant Stuffy's for breakfast.  Huge portions as always so each of us had a doggy bag, which Sam couldn't wait to pounce upon when we arrived home.

A sunny day with no plans led M and I to taking a drive to Seaside.  We parked, we browsed, we took in the surf, we ate a pronto pup, caramel corn, and taffy (including maple-bacon taffy) then it was time to return home. We also participated in my favorite activity - taking pictures of M in a variety of hats.  It was a very productive and yet relaxing weekend!

My New CD Collection

My new man, whom I will now refer to as "M", mainly because I'm running out of boyfriend terms to use, has been giving me homemade CD's as gifts.  My first CD was titled "Alicia"; I then received Alicia 2.0 along with Adele 19, Whitney Houston hits, and Bob Seager's Greatest Hits, which he made simply because I happened to mention I liked him.  M came over for dinner tonight (curry chicken) and surprised me with CD Alicia 3.0, which made me so happy because they make my commute much more enjoyable.  Especially since I know he picked out each individual song with me in mind.

Thanks M!  Can't wait to listen to Alicia 3.0 tomorrow morning on my drive to work!

Little Things Mean the Most

Sometimes it's just the little things that make me happy.

Moving Up in the World - For example, yesterday my new chair arrived...my new office chair.  My previous chair was cloth, stained, and didn't raise high enough for me to experience an ergonomically correct posture as I typed.  My replacement chair - black, leather, and with a height of 22 inches, is much more conducive to comfort as I pound away on my keyboard.

Fragrance from Unexpected Places - Another unexpected item makes a few moments of my life more enjoyable...my nose spray.  Yes, my Fluconose nose spray seems to have a wonderful scent, similar to vanilla or flowers or sandalwood...an aromatic smell and taste that seem to make shooting medicine up my nose much more enjoyable.

Tap Dancing for Clothes - This commercial for White House/Black Market makes me smile:

Shoe of the Week

Today was one of those days filled with noise, interruptions, and talking, and talking, and talking.  I was so tempted to, for the first time, close my office door in order to block out the chaos and just get my work done!  The only highlight was someone who stopped by for directions to her second interview - she was wearing the most fabulous pair of heels!  Black, high heeled pumps similar to the Maleva's below - a glimmer of optimism during a day filled with bedlam and babbling!

What Is This - Diva's Food Blog?

My Diva Sister Luna sent this to all my brothers and sisters so we could relive our memories of Mom making homemade caramel from sweetened condensed milk.  So easy and yet so yummy!  The following are directions for this treat - try it and enjoy!!!

PS - I promise to lay off the food articles, at least for a few days!!!

Ingredients :
1 8 ounce can sweetened condensed milk

Direction :
1. Immerse closed can on its side in a pot of boiling water (I don't remember my mom placing the can on its side so I'm not so sure this is required).
2. Leave on a simmer or light boil for 2 hours topping off with water as needed. Be careful and don’t let the water dry out.
3. Remove from heat and let cool thoroughly before opening can. Condensed milk should be thick and a nice caramel color. Don’t open the can while its still hot as that can be very, very messy.

Saturday Lebanese Experience

My boyfriend took me to a different kind of restaurant this weekend - Lebanese.  It is called Nicholas and it was different and wonderful.  After browsing the menu, which contained a ton of unusual items, I selected chicken and rice while he chose a gyro sandwich.

The waitress brought out a bowl of seasoned oil along with humus.  She then delivered to us this huge, and I mean HUGE, hot homemade pita bread, which was simply divine.  The humus was creamy, with paprika, red oil, and green onion on top.  The best humus I've had ever and it put every other store bought humus to shame.

Monster pita bread
The waitress then delivered our entrees - mine an entire hind quarter of seasoned chicken laying on a bed of rice and my guy a lamb gyros sandwich enveloped in the pita bread.  Beyond fantastic!  We ate, we talked, we ate, we laughed, we ate some more, and then we asked for to go boxes as it was simply too much food.

It was a memorable dinner with a great person.  There is nothing better than sharing a new dining experience with someone who makes that event even better.  Here's to venturing out and taking more dining risks in my future!!!

St. Paddy's Day and Hitting the Grill

Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone - time to get your pinches in to your friends and family and perhaps some unsuspecting strangers!

Last night we broke out the grill for some Friday night barbecue.  I own a huge gas grill but hadn't taken the cover off in over a year; thankfully it was still in working order and even had propane so it was good to go.

My beau had grill duty cooking chicken and apple sausage while I whipped up mashed potatoes for dinner with my boys.  I had picked up some Hillshire Farms chicken, apple and gouda sausage while the grill master brought along Alfresco chicken, sweet apple, and maple links.  I have to admit his were much better than mine....fresher without a processed twang to them (available at Winco.)  Some of the boy's friends snuck in on the dinner so in the end there were no leftovers.  We topped off the dinner with homemade sugar-free strawberry cheese cake which my man had made from scratch.  It was all delicioso!!
Chicken Apple Sausage!

Have a wonderful St. Paddy's Day Divas!!!

TGIF and Give Me a One-Eyed Monster!

Brother Todd sent his sibs the following picture the other day - he was cooking up some One-Eyed Monsters.  These are made by buttering bread, tearing out a hole in the middle, placing it on a hot skillet, then breaking an egg in the hole and cooking it up.  Yum!!

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!!

McDinky's and Memories

Cap'n Yobys
Last night son Jordan rode along with me as I picked up the new plates for my car, which finally arrived at the dealership.  After the car lot, we were going to pick up dinner at Wendy's for the family; however, we had passed by Cap'n Yoby's so decided it was a night for fish and chips.

Cap'n Yoby's has been a local staple in the area for years.  The man (who passed away a few years back) who started this restaurant actually went to school with my mom.  It was a lunch hot spot for myself and my BFF in high school - we had an open campus so we'd book it over to CY for fish at lunch then back to school.  The fish is awesome....still the same recipe as when I was in high school.  They also offer up the famous "McDinky" burger....a fairly small burger.  I picked up a family order of fish along with some McDinky's for the boys to share at home for dinner.

The only thing that has changed in this local diner?  The prices!!  Dang they have risen!!!  But for a trip down memory lane, it's worth it once in a while.

Good Company, Good Times and a Great Weekend!

I can't believe the weekend is almost over....perhaps that's because I've lost an hour in there somewhere due to Daylight Savings time!

Friday found my beau and me cruising to Silverdale, which is near Bremerton, WA.  We checked into the Silverdale Beach Hotel, which led us to think it was on the beach.  It was actually  located more on an inlet rather than a beach - rock and sand and smaller surf.  The hotel was nice, especially since our vacation was free; I had two nights free along with two $25 off dinner coupons and two free breakfast coupons.  Score!!   In addition, we were able to upgrade to a suite at no charge so that made us happy!  We were on the third floor room with a balcony right over the water; the suite also included a fireplace and jacuzzi tub so we were in heaven!

After lunch we browsed the local mall (hello...shopping is part of a divine vacation) and then we cruised around Silverdale to check out the sights, which included a waterfront park.  Friday evening found us having dinner at Josef's, the hotel restaurant, then drinking a few homemade "chocolate birthday cake" martinis in the room.  Yum!

Saturday morning we made our way to Bremerton to catch the ferry to Seattle.  It took about an hour to get to Seattle, where we disembarked then began sightseeing in the big city.  Our intent was to hit Pike Place Market; however, after lunch at Ivar's (with the best clam chowder) we ended up strolling the wharf, including a visit to the Ivar's store; a closing sale at another souvenir store; then a trip through the Seattle Aquarium, which neither of us had ever seen.  At that point we were nearing the time for the return trip to Bremerton so we skipped Pike Place and made our way back to the ferry.  In about 1.50 hours, we were back to our hotel where we recuperated from our day of walking.

Sunday arrived too soon!  After breakfast we cleaned up, packed up, checked out, then made our way home.  Our main topic of conversation during our trip home?  Our next trip destination!!

A Lot of R&R for the Weekend

I am soo excited for this weekend!  My beau and I are traveling to stay Friday to Sunday at the Silverdale Beach Hotel, which is by the Dyes Inlet on the Kitsap Penninsula.  I've never traveled to this area so I can't wait to go exploring.  We've got a king room along with gift certificates for dinner and breakfast - all at no charge, courtesy of my work.  Can't beat that!  It will be a relaxing weekend, to which I'm so looking forward!!

A Real Eye Roller Here!

A pair of chinos has sparked a Twitter debate over what's funny and what's downright sexist. Emma Barnett, the digital media editor for the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph tweeted a pic of the washing label on a new pair of pants her boyfriend purchased. The label gives wearers basic cotton instructions, as well as the tip, "or give it to your woman, it's her job." The company that sold the pants, Madhouse Fashion, responded by tweeting that it had failed to proof the care instructions, which it says were "clearly meant to be a joke," and "will be more careful in the future."

Quirky Keurig

By chance I received a new Keurig coffee machine for free, which I set up yesterday.  I also picked up a variety of coffee/drink "pods" including Doughnut Shop Coffee, Chai Latte, and Hot Cocoa.  I tried it out today for the first time....none of my larger cups fit under the spout so I'm going to have to figure out a solution for that!  The boys ought to love it - Sam has already used it twice so it appears to be his new toy.  For me, as long as it gives me coffee when I need it I'll be happy!

Breathe, Smile and Say Thank You!

Compliments can be very hard for me to accept.  I'm not exactly sure why, but it's uncomfortable for me to have the focus directly on myself....I'd rather it be about other people.  That doesn't mean I'm a wallflower...I mean, hello, I do consider myself a Diva!  However, when complimented I frequently say "Oh stop" or "Enough already."  Perhaps this isn't the best tactic to take, especially when the one complimenting me is my new man. The following is an excerpt from an article I found on line about deflecting compliments.  This article has inspired me to smile, say thank you, and accept the compliment as it was intended!

If you're uncomfortable receiving compliments, it's likely that you discount compliments and thereby stop the compliments from being made by that person again. The ways of discounting a compliment include: suggesting that it was nothing or that someone else could have done it better, thinking that the complimenter must be after something from you, being embarrassed and blushing or giving a compliment in return, being sarcastic or insisting that the complimenter doesn't mean what they say. Each of these ways of deflecting a compliment results in putting down both yourself and the giver of the compliment, so they're not actually very giving or kind responses. If you have these problems in relation to accepting compliments, try to see the motivation for discounting compliments in a different light:

Modesty: If you think that you're being modest by deflecting a compliment, think again. Modesty is a virtue, provided it isn't taken to an extreme; like any other trait, it has to exist in moderation. Modesty becomes a noose around your neck when it cripples your style and causes you to overlook what you're good at and the skills that define you. If you feel you need to compare yourself to someone who is always going to be "better" than you, then it's time to stop the comparisons, lower the bar of modesty and start respecting the good things about yourself a whole lot more.

Distrust: If you discount a compliment because you lack trust in the motivations of the giver, then you're being aggressive or hostile. You're immediately assuming that this person is being sycophantic and is weaseling their way into your good books just for their own purposes. While there is a possibility from time to time that an occasional person might be telling a white lie, most people are genuine about giving compliments and deciding on whether or not someone is trustworthy on the basis of compliments is a daft approach to life.

Trying to match the compliment: If you feel obliged to give a compliment in return for a compliment, it's likely that you're a people pleaser and that you're trying to self-efface by batting back the compliment. If you think "I can't keep this compliment, they deserve it more than me!" and immediately scramble to bat it back to them, then it's possible you're denying the beauty of the compliment you earned based on your own behavior and way of being.

Think about taking a compliment as an exercise in being assertive.  An assertive person knows their self worth and appreciates acknowledgement, but neither seeks it out nor rebuffs it when received. More importantly, an assertive response is a recognition that you are worth the compliment and that you are entitled to quell any negative voice that seeks to deflect the compliment.

See accepting a compliment as a compliment in itself. In accepting a compliment, you are telling the other person that you trust their judgment, their wisdom and their sense of self. Accepting compliments also tells the other person that you appreciate what they have to say about you. More than anything, focus on receiving the compliment rather than on its content. This helps you to acknowledge the compliment and express appreciation for it being given to you. Most importantly, since giving a compliment is a form of uttering an opinion, stop yourself from disagreeing with it or you risk downplaying someone else's opinion.

Decide how you'd like to take the compliment. While it's clear that you can deflect or discount a compliment in various ways, you can also respond to a compliment positively in a number of ways. It really depends upon the context that you're in and how you're perceiving the compliment. In particular, you can choose an appropriate response to a compliment depending on whether you'd like to accept the compliment itself at face value, even if you don't agree with it, or if you'd like to accept the compliment's substance and reflect that in your response, perhaps even using it to engage on further conversation.

When accepting the compliment as it is, even if it's not something you agree with, keep the reply simple and stay focused on the fact of receiving the compliment and be appreciative that the person was happy to compliment you. Some examples are:

  • "Thank you very much" or just "thank you". These are simple, timeless classics that should be easy enough to utter even if the compliment has caught you off guard. If that's all you can think to say, leave it at that.
  • "Thanks, I appreciate that."
  • "Thank you; that's a really lovely thing to say."
  • "Thanks - that makes me feel really good."
  • "Thanks. That means a lot to me."
  • "Thanks, you're a kind person."
Smile.  When taking a compliment, smiling says a lot without requiring you to say anything. You've probably earned it, so enjoy your moment in the spotlight. Also, pay attention while you're being complimented. If you give a person a half-hearted reply such as "whatever" or "mhm", don't expect that person to be quick to compliment you again. An expressive "thank you" is much better than a dreary "uh-huh."

Not Rockin the No Eyebrow Look

One of my kid's friends offered son Jordan $20 to shave his eyebrows.  WTF??  I had to put my foot down on that one because Jordy was actually considering it.  The no eyebrow look is just not going to work, especially since the kid has senior pictures in April.  Jordan is known for his unusual mode of dress and eccentric style but I had to draw the line on this little escapade!

Happy Saturday!

I had a wonderful surprise yesterday at work when my new guy showed up with a bouquet of pink tulips in hand and took me out to lunch.  I was having a bit of a blue day and it was exactly what the doctor ordered!  Today, rather than fixing dinner at my place, I'll be traveling to see him.  The main reason for this is because my house is full of teenage boys that will hardly allow us to have a quiet conversation; his place makes much more sense for that!

Here's to a fabulous Saturday everyone!!
